Tacuba Taco Bar, Branford

I've been checking the Suburban Restaurant's website weekly for news about Suzette and Franco's new taco joint; and finally: success! It opened last week and I raced down to Branford. It's a rare thing to get everything right, but this talented couple's collaboration always works (Roomba, Bespoke, Suburban). Franco is the genius in the kitchen and Suzette whips the decor and the front of the house into shape. And what's not to love about their new Mexican concept? It's inexpensive, fresh, original, authentic and lively. And then there's the food! I started with this refreshing app of Ensalada de Fruta: watermelon, pineapple, papaya, cucumber and jicama spiked with hot chili and lime juice. Embarrassingly, we ordered almost everything else: crisp tostones, a lobster arepa (oh!), three versions of tacos, rice and beans, and would have ended the meal with a plantain banana split if we could have managed it. The idea is small plates, so you can try lots of stuff. Quench your thirst with twenty-four types of tequilas mixed into all manner of original cocktails (or a bucket of 4 adorable Coronitas!). No reservations, but not to worry; you can happily sit out the wait next door at Swill, their new wine bar, and nosh on cheese and charcuterie.
p.s. Hey Suzette and Franco, Branford is nice and all, but could you spread a little love down the Shoreline??
